Great online studio visit with artist Kelsey Brookes, at Mark Quint, La Jolla, through 12/19

This great post of a trip to artist Kelsey Brookes studio is one of several lushly photographed articles on current contemporary art happenings around the world from another recent art blog discovery Arrested Motion.

For his debut solo show with the gallery, Kelsey has delivered a stunning new body of work that seems to bridge the best qualities of his earlier work with the more detailed work from his bigger shows last year (like his solo with New Image Art).

All his best elements are there, from his day glow color palette to the intensely detailed highlights to his stunning use of text and the human form – “Bigger, Brighter, Bolder” delivers on all three statements and then some. The key to Kelsey’s work is viewing it up close, and many of these new works are in the 3 x 3’ and 4 x 4’ range, so in-person viewing is a must….

Opens TODAY: Mark Quint & Adam Belt at Lux Art Institute, Encinitas

Lovely invitation from La Jolla’s Mark Quint to the opening of SPECIMEN, a commissioned project opening this afternoon at Lux Art Institute:

Dear Friends,

Lux Art Institute commissioned artist Adam Belt and myself to design a store for them, and we would like to invite you to the opening this coming Friday, November 27.

We have named the store SPECIMEN and have turned Lux’s library into a curio shop, full of bits of science, objects of nature, and artistic whatnots. It is geared for children, grandparents, and everyone in between.

We realize that this is a busy weekend with the Thanksgiving holiday and that this is also a last minute invite, but if you are in town, we would love to see you. The hours are between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. Below is a link for Lux.

I hope you have a great Thanksgiving.

Best,
Mark Quint

11/14 artist Ann Lislegaard at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

One of several excellent art events and openings in San Diego this weekend happens this Saturday afternoon, November 14 , 2 PM at MCASD La Jolla when artist Ann Lislegaard discusses her work in the current Automatic Cities show at MCASD La Jolla.

Currently featured in the exhibition Automatic Cities, artist Ann Lislegaard will discuss her work on view. Exploring the relationship between architecture and language, Lislegaard’s installations are often based on literary sources.

Her most recent body of work, including Crystal World (after J.G. Ballard), translates science fiction novels into three-dimensional video animations. Concerned with the notion of time, space, and place, Lislegaard employs sound and light in architectural constructions to reflect on how we orient ourselves in and otherwise perceive the physical and the psychological environments we inhabit.

Members: Free / General: Free with Museum admission

Read more about Saturday’s event on the excellent MCASD website.

Hugh Davies lecture THURSDAY at MCASD

HUGH DAVIES ON FRANCIS BACON

Artist Francis BaconThursday, July 16 > 7 PM
MCASD La Jolla

After the suicide of his lover George Dyer in 1971, Francis Bacon began a series of paintings known as the Black Triptychs. Dr. Hugh Davies, MCASD’s David C. Copley Director, interviewed Bacon multiple times in 1973 about these paintings, which Davies has described as a “frenzied momentum of a struggle against death”, giving him unique perspective on the artist and these works.

A renowned scholar on the work of Francis Bacon, Davies has lectured on the artist internationally, most recently at the invitation of the Tate Britain in London, and has published extensively on the artist. He serves on the Francis Bacon Authentication Committee, and in 1999 curated the MCASD exhibition Francis Bacon: The Papal Portraits of 1953.

ADMISSION: $5 General / Free to MCASD Members and Students. Not a Member? Join now and get in free to this and many other events.
