San Diego artist Gustaf Rooth in New York Times
Local art hero Gustaf Anders Rooth makes the New York Times’ latest write-up on San Diego.
Begun in 2001, Ray at Night (www.rayatnight.com), a monthly art walk, is now San Diego’s largest event of its kind, drawing as many as 1,500 patrons the first Saturday of each month.
“It happened really quickly,” said Gustaf Rooth, an artist who is the founder of Ray at Night and the owner of Planet Rooth Studios Gallery (3811 Ray Street; 619-297-9663; www.planetrooth.com). “North Park went from being negative and dilapidated to suddenly this high-energy major destination point.”

Art as Authority comments on MCASD 2010 plan for San Diego artist show
Check out Kevin Freitas commentary on MCASD “Here Not There” plan for 2010 from the spot-on Art As Authority blog:
Some of that critical mass will be chased down in the nooks & crannies of North County, North Park and further south to what I’m guessing will be Barrio Logan or what according to Pincus, the museum has dubbed as the “alternative art scene.” This should raise a few eyebrows, if only to ask “alternative to what ?” Alternative used in any relationship to the art world today, has likely petered out its once distinguishing character of well, uh… existing outside of the cultural norm. Still this is very gratifying; if Sanroman is willing to look in these places by letting the artists out of their pens, she will be richly compensated for her efforts with good works by good artists.

Steel Artist Barbara McDonald at Vine to Glass, Oceanside, this Saturday 9/26
Art happening in Oceanside, CA (San Diego county) at Vine to Glass, a North County wine bar.
WHIM OF IRON – ART IN STEEL
BY BARBARA MCDONALDJoin us at Vine to Glass this Saturday, September 26th, at 6pm for a meet and greet artists reception with Barbara McDonald. Wine, beer and tastings will be available for purchase as well as appetizers.
Barbara McDonald creates one-of-a-kind wall sculptures in steel on board, sometimes with stained glass embellishments. Her style has been described as “painting with a plasma cutter.” Although she grew up in the home of a classically trained artis, her father, Barbara did not find her personal artistic obsession until well into her sixties, when she enrolled in a class on metal fabrications. Many of the pieces are multi-layered on brilliantly colored backgrounds and her themes are generally cosmic or at least other-worldly.
Thanks to hardworking San Diego artist Kate McCavitt for the heads up.

DELAYED GRATIFICATION – Dave Ghilarducci – OMA

from the press release DELAYED GRATIFICATION by Dave Ghilarducci Curated by Emily Phelps Oceanside Museum of Art Parker Gallery July 14 – September 25, 2009 “Meet the Artist” Dave Ghilarducci on Saturday, August 8th at 2:00 p.m. “ Meet the Artist ” is free with museum admission and complimentary for members of Oceanside Museum of Art as a benefit of membership. DELAYED GRATIFICATION by Dave Ghilarducci OMA Parker Gallery, July 14 – Sept. 25, 2009 Are you sick and tired of struggling for results? Well, you’re in luck: WE CAN’T HELP YOU. Delayed Gratification offers a stationary test drive into a world of leaking desires and technological insurgence that may be ours or someone else’s…all we know for sure is you’ll have to get a sweat on. San Diego artist Dave Ghilarducci will install a bicycle with a generator connected to the back wheel that will power an LED display. When the visitor climbs on the bicycle and takes a ride, the LED will project words of wisdom from books that discuss utopian and dystopian views of the future. Delayed Gratification , curated by Emily Phelps, will be on view in the Parker Gallery July 14 through September 25, 2009. “ Meet the Artist ” David Ghilarducci on Saturday, August 8th at 2:00 p.m. “ Meet the Artist ” is free with museum admission and complimentary for members of Oceanside Museum of Art as a benefit of membership. Ghilarducci’s participatory work investigates perception on an everyday level, often using popular technology as the subject and object of artistic inquiry. Delayed Gratification playfully confronts the contemporary paradigm that if man willingly submits to technology he will become more efficient and therefore lead a more meaningful life. The artwork complicates the matter by creating a forced multitasking environment; instead of simply riding a bike or reading a book, the two activities have been overlaid to the extent that one must experience both activities simultaneously or neither at all. The work further plays on the notion of labor; revealing the book’s contents requires physical labor on the part of the viewer. Through the world of engineering, Ghilarducci discovered the language of art. In 2006 he resigned from his engineering profession to begin a fulltime art practice. He endeavors to make interactive works that engage the viewer with a sense of play and introspection using electronics as a platform to investigate the relationship between technology and perception. The Parker Gallery is located on the 2nd level of Oceanside Museum of Art and is designed for special projects.
