14th January 2010 – The Arts Council of The Temecula Valley would like to invite you to the Artists Reception and Award Ceremony for the “Visual Expressions 2010″ juried art show. The exhibit is scheduled to run from January 22nd 2010 to February 21st 2010.

The Show is chaired by Angela Morris, President of The Council and Sissi Hale.
The very talented and lovely Mollie Kellogg juried the Visual Expressions 2010 entries. She was assisted by Lisa Bebi, another fascinating artists from San Diego.

Angela Morris said “We are so excited to say that our ‘Call to Artists’ had an amazing turnout of artists and art. We had over 200 pieces of fantastic work submitted by 56 artists”.
Sissi Hale said “I would like to personally commend all the artists who entered the show on their artistry and talent. The Council is so pleasantly surprised to see such an eclectic display of style and brilliance”.

Morris also added “Our mission is to raise the profile of the arts in Temecula, and as part of this program we will be organizing a series of events, including juried shows, solo shows, group shows, contests, plein air field trips and other activities. The Visual Expressions show is just the start, we want to encourage local artists to gain wider exposure, especially new artists looking to break through.”

The Council would like to thank the participating artists for making such long drives from all corners of Southern California. We have artists from Pasadena to El Cajon and so many cities in between. We would like to extend an open invitation to all artists, gallery owners, collectors, the press and members of our community to attend this special night for the arts in Temecula.

The juried competition includes categories in the following media: Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, Mixed-Media, Collage, Pastels, Sculpture, Print and Photography.

Quilt Artists in Southern California: SAQA Call for Entries

Call for Entries
International Quilt Festival/Long Beach will showcase quilts dedicated to the beauty of the west coast of North America—the cities, the bays, the coastline, the ocean, the waves, the lighthouses, the cliffs, the homes, the boats/ships, the birds, the wildlife, the wildfires, the range in weather—in a special exhibit, West Coast Wonders. This exhibit will premiere at International Quilt Festival/Long Beach, July 23–25, 2010. We would also like to retain quilts for possible exhibit at International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston, TX, October 30–November 7, 2010, and International Quilt Festival/Chicago April, 2011.

We would like to invite you to be considered for inclusion in this exhibit. You may submit a total of three quilts for our consideration. …

Annenberg Space for Photography Fascinates Visitors to New Show

This is a great article by Max Donner on the popular examiner.com website, his focus being the arts in San Diego and Southern California.

San Diego raised the bar for photographic arts with “Avedon: Portraits of Power” this summer. Not to be outdone, Los Angeles is raising the bar a notch higher with a pioneering perspective on sports photography at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City. Titled “SPORT: Iooss and Leifer” the photography exhibition features the best works by Sports Illustrated photographers Walter Iooss and Neil Leifer.

This exhibition is both a strong role model for arts institutions that want to highlight the artistic elements of professional photography and a good example of what arts institutions can achieve with the right role models….

Major David Hockney Exhibition to Open New UK Gallery

David Hockney is one of the most thoughtful and prolific artists of the late 20th century with own unique dialogue with southern California.

NOTTINGHAM.- A major exhibition of over 60 works by David Hockney from national and international museum collections will open Nottingham Contemporary , one of the most interesting new spaces for art in the UK. Designed by leading architects Caruso St. John, the public opening is on Saturday November 14, 2009. The exhibition will re-examine Hockney’s work 1960-1968, his early years in London and Los Angeles, in the context of art today. It is the first time the early work – finishing with the iconic Californian painting “A Bigger Splash” – has been brought together since the Whitechapel retrospective of 1970, nearly 40 years ago.

Napoleon Marches Into Southern California Oct. 11, 2009

On Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, MUZEO (the noted center for arts, knowledge, entertainment, and culture in Anaheim, CA) presents its biggest exhibition to date with the opening of the opulent Treasures of NAPOLÉON. The elaborate and elegantly appointed traveling exhibition (making its only west coast stop in Anaheim) offers MUZEO patrons the rare opportunity to see beyond the “legend” of Napoléon Bonaparte in order to gain an understanding of one of the world’s great historical figures. It also shows how art and design played a key role in creating not only his Empire, but also his lasting place in history and in the public’s consciousness.
